I’ve enjoyed most of the T.C. Boyle stories that we’ve read so far. I like how satirical they all have been. My favorite was “Modern Love.” I feel like Boyle’s interpretation of society’s view on relationships is very accurate. Society has adapted this idea that love is just putting up with someone because it’s better to do that then be alone. The narrator of the story didn’t even like the girl that he was dating. Everything about her annoyed him. He just stuck by her to get sex and so that he wouldn’t be alone. She didn’t really love him either. She seemed to just not want to be alone either. I’m sure if she was afraid that no one else could handle her crazy or if she stayed with him for amusement. Obviously she didn’t care about him enough because she broke up with him rather harshly by claiming that he had athletes foot and then telling him that they were never really that close. Another story that I really liked was “On for the long haul.” It showed how gullible humans can sometimes be. It’s undertone was the whole “If you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything,” lesson. The story “The Human Fly” was my least favorite. The main character, the Human Fly, seemed mentally ill and kept doing death-defying stunts yet everyone just let him. The narrator, his agent, just made money of those stunts and then profited greatly off of his death. The fact that everyone just stood around and watched as that man executed his own death is not only morally wrong, it’s absolutely disgusting. Throughout the story, the Human Fly only grew worse and worse, mentally and physically. He was emaciated, dirty, smelled bad, pulled crazier stunts, and constantly looked like someone had beaten him pretty badly. Other then that, the T.C. Boyle stories have been a very good read. I, being a very sarcastic person, thoroughly enjoy all of his sarcasm that he portrays in each story. Not only are his works a reflection of what’s wrong with our society, they are a modern twist on classic ideals.
