For the TC Boyle paper assignment I think I am going to write a theme paper, rather than a compare and contrast paper. Throughout many of the stories we have read there has been reoccurring themes with a point that Boyle wants to get across to the readers. The characters in Cardinal Knowledge and Modern Love are all very similar. Both stories include a thirty-year-old man who is desperate, and attractive women with very unique problems. Alena, in Cardinal Knowledge, is an eco-terrorist vegan who is determined to help animals, even though she is too stupid to actually help any of the animals. For example, her brilliant plan to set the turkeys free before thanksgiving ended up with the turkey’s dead and run over. Breda, in Modern Love, is a germ a phobic who avoids any physical contact, even during sex with the man she claims to love. Both stories can be found in the love section of the book, however they are not a typical love story and ends with both men being alone. These stories get Boyles view on “true love” across clearly. He does not think true love exists, that many attractive women have crazy quirks, and that all men want is sex and will go through hoops to have sex. For example, in Modern Love the narrator is willing to put on a full body condom just to have sex. And in Cardinal Knowledge, Jim decides on his thirtieth birthday to stop eating meat just so he can have sex with a hot vegan. Their actions are more desperate than chivalrously seeking true companionship. Throughout both stories Jim and the narrator of Modern Love try and convince themselves that everything they are doing is totally worth it because they are getting laid, but clearly Boyle makes a point to show that they are not okay with what they are doing. The reoccurring theme in both stories is desperation and the absence of any form of love. Boyle makes his opinions clear to the reader without plainly stating it. Both stories in the love section in the book, without any actual love show Boyle’s point of view on love.
