I agree that technology is an awesome tool we have the privilege to use in our classrooms! I think technology can help foster emergent literacy skills and make them a little more interesting for students who struggle to learn to read. In response to your question, I don't believe this would "set back" any of your students in your classroom. Now, keep in mind this is also coming from someone who has no teaching experience, only experiences in internships and practicums. From what I've seen, using shared readings in heterogeneous groups has proven itself to be very successful for all involved. I think it's great for the student or students with ASD because they are given a model to follow of what you're looking for as far as their literacy skills. I also believe it is very beneficial for the students in the group without disabilities to be a part of helping a student who struggles. This teaches things such as empathy, respect, patience, kindness, and humility. So, as shared reading groups are a benefit to our students with ASD and teaches them a lot about literacy, it also teaches the students in the group a little about being a helping hand and a compassionate citizen.
