CCCTI Cohort Lesson feedback

Glow: I think that the book and focus was well-suited for the students with ASD. You mentioned how neither of them had many friends so I loved that the focus of the lesson was about why friendship is important. I also thought the book was a good choice since Alex likes insects so much. I thought that teaching about idioms was really important too because Alex takes things very literal; this could help him understand what those phrases mean when he comes across them in the book. Good choice in the lesson focus and book!

Grow: My concern was that the lesson might be a little too advanced for working on emergent literacy skills. From the description, it seemed that Alex is the student who is emergent literate and that Morgan is far past that stage. Is that correct? If so, Iím not sure that Alex would perform well on answering the comprehension questions. I know that his group would do the task together but it may be too much for him to participate in. Maybe the teacher should work individually with him on the book because of his tendency to take things literally and struggle with staying on task. The teacher could read the book with him and ask him questions along the way and then relate the story to things in his life so that he stays focused. The teacher could also give more detailed explanations about the idioms (and other things that he takes too literally) if working individually with Alex.
