I know that this is a theoretical student, but I love him already. The situation was very realistic and it is a very common aspect of ASD for the student not to be able to connect with the characters and remember the parts of the story. I think that the visual of the red and green card is excellent for John to see and have to write down the important parts of the story. That will help him remember the story as well as go deeper into it. Overall I think that the story is fun and the activity goes along well with it to meet the needs of the student and also keep the other kids engaged. For constructive feedback, I think that it would be helpful for John to be able to go through a story that has more of a plot to grasp the beginning, middle, and end of a story and have three note cards. Kind of like going over the rising action, climax, etc. I think that there are many directions that could be taken and that the one your group went with is one great option!
