I agree that making writing meaningful to our students is absolutely crucial. When my group was working on our lesson plan trying to think of a way to make letters, words, and ultimately sentences mean something to our student was the most difficult part for me. I am hopeful that it will be easier to come up with ideas when we have real students that we actually know. I also think a big part of this could just be showing them how writing is relevant in every day life and finding ways for them to actively participate in. For example, the Koppenhaver and Erikson article talked about having the students sign in daily. Being able to write your name is a skill that every individual needs to have, and we have to come up with ways to help our students obtain this skill.
