That quote in Carnahan's article also stood out to me! I think it is so important for teachers to teach comprehension alongside teaching how to read. If they don't, then reading wouldn't really be reading. I feel like when we separate the definition of the word 'reading' with 'teaching students how to read'. When we ask someone "what are you reading?", we aren't asking what words you are decoding, we are asking "whats the book called, and what's it about?" When we teach reading we need to provide meaning to the words. I think that Letterland does a great job of this!
