I also didn't know that silent reading with comprehension was the ultimate goal. It definitely makes sense though. It's kind of like teaching students daily living skills. We assist them, and eventually our goal is for them to understand all the steps and to do it independently. I think that silent reading is essentially independent reading, and that is what we want for our students to be able to take from reading instruction.
