I would love to one day become an autism specialist. We currently have a behavior specialist at our school, but she has a lot of knowledge on working with students with autism- most of which has come from experience. I love to pick her brain. The cool thing is that many strategies that work for students with autism also work with other populations of students. I have been asked to go assist other teachers by offering strategies and supports for their students with ASD. The thing that I found really neat about that is going to observe the student, pulling from experience and knowledge and implementing supports and seeing them work! One of the classes I went to support, there was a student which that could not keep from roaming the classroom and getting into everything he could find during rest time. I recommended taping off an area in the classroom and putting some of his favorite things within the taped section. Once we did this, what do you know- he stayed in the area with minimal redirection. Just something as simple as the visual boundary made a huge difference!
