repeated readings and comprehension
Fri Jun 12, 2015 13:12

Repeated readings in isolation (like Read Naturally does) for the purpose of reading more fluently (as measured by words per minute) will have little effect on comprehension. However, if you used the same text for multiple comprehension purposes (I'm posting something in reading comprehension resources today), you can support fluency and comprehension growth. E.g. read first verse of Itsy Bitsy Spider the first time to predict what will happen to the spider; read it a second time to tell in 8 words or less what it is all about; read it a third time to make a list of 3 items he should take on his journey to make it more successful; read it a 4th time to write a new third verse... Get the idea? Our experience is the lower children read, and the further they lag behind their peers, or the more trouble they have with comprehension, the more repetitions are a good idea. But always with a new purpose. The instructional principle is "repetition with variety" in order to sustain student engagement.
