While I agree with your post about how students should be able to read books that interest them, however if your topic you are trying to cover is slavery, how does a book on transportation teach them that? I believe that something teachers struggle with is integrating subjects together. Believe it or not, history is an adventure full of drama, secrets, and death. I believe we need to work harder on finding those types of literature that engage our students, but also teaches students the topic we are trying to get through to them.

        I believe books like Henry's freedom box for example would work in this situation. It is about slavery but also describes Henry's journey on a boat.
