First, I feel your pain. As an EC Teacher I was always feeling the burden of soooo many needs. It saddens me to hear about the teacher's "plan" for teaching the students with disabilities in her classroom. The one thing that I want to point out and wish all general education teachers would realize is that when students with disabilities are in your classroom, they are also students of a general education classroom and the teacher in that classroom has the responsibility of their education. Just because they have been identified does not mean they are not part of the general population. They are students. Speaking as a general education teacher, I have the responsibility of teaching them. This was driven home to me and the staff I worked with when I first started teaching as a general education teacher of a third grade classroom, by a very wise principal. As teachers we had to turn in lesson plans weekly and with every lesson we had to write a section on how we were making accommodations and modifications for our students with disabilities. Yes I spent hours developing lesson plans but the end result was a realization of "My" responsibility to each and every student in my class.
I was in a state council meeting this week and our state director, Bill Hussey made a statement which also struck home he said, "EC students are general education students first!"
You do not get time, you make time. It takes a lot of planning and organization. But the end result is worth it! You will feel less frustrated and have a classroom environment that is set for success.
Best of luck to you and I am glad that you are seeing the needs of your students.

That makes me so sad to hear. I understand that time is precious, and sometimes our students take a lot of that time, but they will do nothing but fall further and further behind without attention... more
