The Characteristics of Skilled Readers

I would have never thought of the different components of reading comprehension or would have thought to broken them down into those 3 different components. Last week I did not see how important silent reading is as our students grow and leave school. Now I not only see the importance of reading comprehension and silent reading, but Dr. Koppenhaver's article also showed the 5 characteristics of a strong reader. We are able to read, comprehend, infer, predict, connect, and reflect without difficulty or thought. Can you imagine how hard it would be to just to be lacking in just one of the 5 listed characteristics. Like Amanda said, it is important for us to know the components of reading, but I think it is also important to note that even if we have never struggled with reading that we still know the list of characteristics and make them goals for our students.
