I have to say, I was wondering the same thing while watching the Mike video. It was awesome to see him and his mother have the communicative connection that they had, however, his mother obviously knows him best. I think the use of an AAC device could be very effective in Mike's situation. He proved that he understood the questions she was asking, but I also wondered if some of his incorrect answers came from a lack of understanding how to effectively communicate. If Mike could be taught the use of an AAC device, it could open up a window of opportunities for him to be able to effectively communicate correct answers to questions. This is all coming from someone who doesn't know the student at all. This decision would have to be made by someone who worked closely with Mike and knew what he was capable of doing.
