I am glad the teacher was trying to make things fun for the students, but I can certainly see how they would just get lost in the song and not really get any reading done. The articles talked about reading at their instructional level, and I think it is likely that all of these kids were not on the same level. It was probably too easy for some kids and too hard for others. I don't think she would have accomplished what she was trying to.

I watched the video of high school students singing the Frozen song "Let it Go, and although one was reading a sheet with lyrics, the other had apparently memorized the song and was singing... more

I think that the whole concept of singing and reading is fun. It is something the students enjoyed doing. To really get a lot out of it, I am sure the teacher could read the lyrics out to them or... more

This is just my opinion, but I do not think that she is really understanding and comprehending what she is saying because it sounds like she is just doing it from rote memorization. What are some... more

I had not thought about it this way but I think you have a point. Half of the time I know the lyrics to a song but don't pay close attention to the words. It's weird because I can sing a song a... more

I think in this case it would have been more beneficial for the students to take the text and the song maybe one verse or line at a time and to look over the words before singing. Obviously this... more

Frozen is a very popular movie. I felt like some of the students perhaps had just had the lyrics memorized from hearing the songs so many times. I personally will admit I know most of the lyrics by... more

I watched this video as well. I understand what you mean about how both students approached and carried out the lesson. I think they each were able to learn something at the level that they were each ... more

"Let it Go" that is a song that most all my students know and love! :) All my students will sing that song and not miss a word. I think this is a common trait when students have such a strong... more

Kelly, I also wondered the same thing! It was interesting that this was a form of teaching students to read/speak. I would like to learn more about this! It's definitely common for teachers to use... more

I saw the video again and see what you are saying, but we can learn from this too. If you notice closely, they have switched the singer's voice to be male and changed the lyrics to fit the male... more

I agree totally, and understand that this is just a "snapshot" of the reading instruction, you are right it could have just been a helpful springboard to start the lesson off. I also like the... more

I agree these students were not necessarily engaged in a literacy activity in the video. But I do think that this is great inspiration to get kids engaged in reading practice. Using a song like this... more

I think you're probably right! When I'm singing a song, I'm just singing the words, definitely not comprehending the meaning or anything like that. Although we don't normally comprehend the words... more

Cool post! I think that it is important to really understand and comprehend what you are reading even if it is music. Think about all of the songs that are catchy and everyone knows but we don't... more
