I think it comes down to just what works best for you. Personally, I think it would be too much for me to write in a journal every day after school, especially to include each student! But I remember in my student teaching, it became in internal process that took place sometimes as often as each period. I would think to myself, "Man, that didn't go like I planned today. I need to do a better job clarifying the directions before our activity tomorrow." Or, "Wow, that student seemed to really connect with that reading strategy, I'll have to be sure to work with him again on that tomorrow." So for me, the "mental notes" works for me - but I think it's just about what works best for you as a reflective practitioner! The idea of taking notes to look back on is a great idea, just time consuming!
