You make many good points. Hope you'll be a school social worker. I'd fine-tune a couple of points. Rather than "giving control," I'd say respect children. As a teacher, I'm just not going to give over control. If I do, I won't be able to accomplish important learning objectives. However, if I respect the child's need for a quiet environment or cloze statements instead of questions or the need to flap his hands...I can teach effectively.

Labels are completely useless from a literacy perspective. If you all learn nothing else from this class, I hope the readings and videos and personal perspectives have shown you that students with ASD are individually different. You can't teach or interact with a label, only the person.

        Yes, thanks for that reminder. It's not so much about giving up control but being able to work alongside the student instead of making decisions for him or her.
