That's awesome, Stacy (: I think these practices are just reminiscent of a different time in teaching. Having students copy lines and trace letters feels right; even in pretend school when I was little and 'teaching' my sisters I had them copy sentences from the board as writing instruction. You see it everywhere. However, it's easy to understand how copying words from around the environment would lead to a dependent, non-creative writer. They aren't using their own ideas and spelling inventions. They're not learning how to write, just how to move a pencil. I'm excited for the change you're bringing!

    I posted on this very thing myself! I can't tell you the number of times I have had my students copy or trace in an effort to teach them to write. I had never really thought about the stupidity... more
