I agree with the other replies that take home journals are great for communication with adults and communication skills in writing itself. I've also learned through my schooling that it's a great tool for ESL students. Even if they write in pictures or in their home language it gets them used to the idea of writing especially when you respond in English and read it to them. Also good to point out that with any students, you aren't pointing out their grammar mistakes so they are feeling more confident.
