I love how the students have been to a local zoo recently and the teacher takes from that experience and interest in animals to base the lesson off of. I also like how the board has a visual reminder of what the students learned the day before and what will be covered that day. I know that would benefit me as a student. This lesson is not too challenging and sets the students up for success with the teacher's guidance. I think that all of the students would have fun discussing facts about cats. The students will also feel proud of the completed story at the end of the week. This lesson practices a lot of skills including writing, using prior knowledge, and critical thinking at a level that is excellent for first grade. My only concerns are how the students are paired up. Yes, it can be very beneficial to pair up a student who is high and low achieving; however, will the student who is at a high level do all of the work and not teach the low achieving student? Students who are good at something does not directly mean that they are good teachers. Depending on the students, I would be cautious of who is paired together. There are pros and cons to it, but as long as there is variety of pairs in other lessons it could be a good option for this one.
You all did a great job on this lesson. It is very thorough!
