Hello, Mary! I absolutely agree that students should be allowed the freedom to creatively write without worrying about being punished for poor grammar and spelling. Dr. Gill, one of the reading professors here at App State said in our class, "Students learn to read and write by reading and writing." Boy was he right! What he meant by this was, we have to give our students the opportunity to practice because that is how they will get better! Also, I agree that tracing is pointless. If the student doesn't understand what they're tracing, then you're just giving that student a meaningless fine motor skills task, which could be useful for that area of practice, but not for writing. Great post!
