I think that this is an extremely appropriate idea. I don't think that you want to take all of the power away from the child, but you do want to make sure that they have enough structure to where the writing is productive. Part of writing is knowing when to reiterate something that has already been said and when to move forward, and this is a skill that must be taught. I definitely think that it is appropriate to help set boundaries and help children to steer their own conversations. When we do this, we are able to help them to learn from one another and learn the art of conversation itself.
