I agree that teaching without tight standards on writing is a wonderful way to engage students and motivate them to want to write but I feel as if at some point that grammar and spelling rules must be taught directly or they will not be mastered. It is all well and good to use an informal practice to help lengthen writing and teach emailing format but in an actual situation where email would be used, sometimes correct grammar and spelling is an important aspect as well. I think a balance between the two approaches is what would be the most beneficial in teaching all needed skills.

        Exactly! I was never given the opportunity to free-write until college and I struggled with it so much. Hopefully, the cycle will end though!
