Yes!! I completely agree with you and for SO long I have thought tracing was completely meaningless and I never saw the point of it in a classroom. It's really not teaching the student anything! I also feel really encouraged and moved by the fact that we should let students write and express themselves and not focus so much on being correct or incorrect or whether or not they have made mistakes. We as teachers need to encourage students' writing, not discourage them! I have never heard of the removal of writing prompts, but wow what an encouraging thought process. I, personally am one of those students who has to have direction and guidance, i.e., I'm sure I would be the student who needed prompting. However, after reading your thought process and response here I feel so driven by this way of thinking. By letting students be moved by what interests them and what they find most exciting, we are getting them engaged and leaving a better impression on them for years to come!
