Mary Bennett Introduction
Mon May 25, 2015 16:24

Hey everyone. I am sure many of you will find this surprising but I am actually not a teacher or pursuing a degree in teaching. Therefore, my perspectives, understandings, and questions may be a little bit different than teachers. I am in the Masters of Social Work (MSW) Program at UNC Charlotte and just finished my first year.

Last May I graduated from the College of Charleston with my BA in Communications. A month later, in July I got married and moved to Salisbury, NC and in August I started my studies in the MSW program. I am excited to learn from all of the teachers about how I can impact gifted children in a social work environment. Although I have never been a teacher, I have worked in a school setting twice. I interned for a school social worker during my undergraduate career and also have worked as an after school day-care teacher.

My experience with autism is limited but valuable. I got to nanny for a little boy diagnosed with Autism for two summers. I was able to work alongside his therapist some and see how to help, teach, and communicate with him. I have also taken a Mental Health Course and have learned about ASD. Excited for this class.
