Striving for Independence

I think the goal for any student is to do everything independently. I agree that allowing a student to do something independently before they are ready may harm them more than help. I think that a possible remedy for this would be to allow them to read with you or with guidance on their instructional level, but allow them to read books that are on their independent level. This may be difficult if their grade level and reading levels differ greatly, but I do think this can be accomplished. I do wonder how to help students who still cannot recognize that on the instructional level they are still struggling and that that is why it is considered instructional level, so I am anxious to hear responses on this.

        Those all seem like good ideas to me but then I also think back to what the articles say about finding that thing that the reader is very interested in and then using it as a tool to motivate them.... more
