I liked this approach to teaching students with ASD. I have never taught my own students, but in my Block 1 classroom there were 2 students who had autism and they definitely loved reading books that were of their interests, and would even have a hard time moving on to a mother book. I think appealing to their interests is a great way to engage them and help them comprehend the text more.
