I absolutely agree that a big part of the discrepancy is simply people are better at some subjects than others. I also wonder if the tendency to memorize words rather than decide them could be related to what Temple Grandin was talking about. She discussed the way her mind worked and how in conversation she would vividly picture specific things. Maybe they picture whole words in their minds as opposed to breaking down the pieces to decode the word.
