McKenzi, this is a great question and something that I have been struggling to answer myself. I think Jacob brought up a great example of shared reading regarding the Treschaun video, but you are correct in saying that is the best case scenario. In the RECALL study, students who had been identified with ASD were partnered with students who were not identified with ASD and worked together on a slightly modified version of shared reading. While no students were on the same level to begin with, all students showed improvement. RECALL addresses the oral language reading comprehension skills you were worried about. RECALL may be something that is difficult to implement in a classroom, especially when planning for a substitute, as someone previously mentioned, because it takes training to ensure that it is being implemented correctly. I don't think there is one answer to this question and there are many ways to get shared reading to work for students with ASD, I would like to find out.
