Re: Home Literarcy Environment

Great post! In my reply to McKenzi's post, we also discussed the importance of outside influences. Teachers play a critcal role in the educational growth and success of children with ASD, but parents can also play a huge part just by spending quality time with their children and teaching them. It's unfortunate that parents with less than a high school education are more unlikely to read to their children. However, one way of helping fix this would be for teachers to explain to parents the importance of reading to their children. This could be done at parent-teacher conferences or other meetings.

Wouldn't that be great?! My hope is to one day find a way to help increase reading in the home and provide books for students to keep at home. However, until then, I think we as teachers should... more
