I was also thinking along the lines of memorization and the concern that would bring up. I think it might be helpful to do a sort of matching game where you have pictures of several animals and then have the student match the written name of the animal with that sound. We did this in a summer school program I helped with, as well as taught the students the ASL signs for different animals. This game them a third and more tangible way to remember the words. After we had the matching game, we removed the pictures and had them just sign the word. It took a lot of practice, but signing seemed to be a great way to recall for them.
