Motivation transition

I completely agree! Finding out what motivates a child is very helpful in motivating them to learn and grow. I think it is also important to try and transition away from external motivation. We talked about this some in my behavior management class last semester. If a child is only externally motivated by a certain thing, the behavior will cease when the motivation ceases. If we build in teaching why a certain behavior (such as reading practice) is helpful, then the child will be more motivated to do it even when the external motivator (praise, grades, m&m, etc) isn't there. If we only worked for praise, then the minute someone stopped praising us, we would cease to do the work.

McKenzi, I really agree that we should not forget to motivate each child as they need to be. Not every child will be motivated by praise or by good grades. Some children might be motivated by doing... more
