I have had the opportunity to take 2 levels of American Sign Language at ASU, and I have gotten to use it with students and members of the Deaf community. Like others have mentioned, it is so important for us to be up to date and to be able to communicate and help our students any way we can. I have seen how sign gives a mean of communication to students who are non-verbal. I have never thought about how signing during class could help keep focus and help avoid distractions. Very interesting thoughts!
