I agree, Navila. It stuck out to me how the students were interested in the writing tools and books without any help from a teacher. I didn't get a chance to see it get carried over into instruction, as you did, but that's a great idea! By letting Josh 'practice' on his own first and then see and feel how it is actually done connects the dots for him between his attempt and how people are able to communicate through this writing.
