I also had/have questions about how to keep our learners with ASD interested in what we are working on. CAR and CROWD are great, evidence-based ways to make this happen when doing shared reading. I also think that it can be accomplished by letting them gain a love for books and helping them connect with the stories. Hopefully, letting books be an integral part of every day and a fun part of free time will lead to this love. As far as connecting with the stories, using CROWD questions and something I learned about today, the PEER strategy, is a good way to help your students interact with both other people and the characters of the story.
