Megan, I also loved your idea of having a central theme! In Dr. Deal's class we were able to take a central theme and develop many different lesson plans around it. We were able to utilize a lot of different alternative texts, such as videos, projects, field trips, and so on. Changing things up and giving students a chance to participate in different activities is a great way to keep students engaged. I believe this makes it a little bit easier to stay on one subject for an extended period of time if need be, or tie in a different subject to the previous one when it is time to move on.
