I like your connection of emergent reading to developing a framework like muscle memory with learning to ride a bike. It is important to allow students a concrete base of literacy before we dive into the phonics behind reading. I often think about the different backgrounds our student come from and how much experience they have prior to entering our classroom. We have to consider the amount of exposure our students have with books while they are growing up. When the students come into our classroom we have to be able to build on their prior knowledge and experiences. No matter what type of exposure they have, we have to make sure they the basic framework of literacy.
