I know this may sound very obvious, but simply modeling and practicing (over and over) finger tracking/ pointing helped a student who I had last year who was also EC and had the same difficulty developing concept of word. When he was pulled for very small group instruction during our leveled reading group block, that teacher forced him to ALWAYS point to each word when she was reading and when he or the other student was reading (these were preprimer books). At times she even held his finger and helped him point to each and every word. I also did a lot (every single day) or choral reading during our LEA time pointed to each word with a giant finger pointer. After I pointed, I had students come up and point. This really seemed to help him as tracking with his finger became an automatic thing he did when he read.

One idea may be to use a cardboard strip half the size of a ruler and cut out a small window big enough for a word to fit in it. As she slides it along the sentence, she will notice the white spaces... more

Joanne, I like your idea about using a cardboard strip to aid in gaining a concept-of-word. This seems like it could be a good option for teaching concept of word to children who are struggling with... more
