Nonsense Words

One point that I pulled from Dr. Koppenhaver's lecture was that nonsense words should not be used in Special Education. As a Special Education teacher, this really makes logical sense to me, because these children are going to focus their efforts toward relating a meaning to the word in their head. This just can't be done with nonsense words. There is no meaning. I agree that there are better options for assessing knowledge of letter sounds in words. This is probably especially true for children with learning disabilities. They need to apply their efforts "real" words and not nonsense words that have no meaning.
