Some situations I have worked with in past years have really opened my eyes to attitudes from home in regard to reading. I heard one parent voice that teaching her child to read was the responsibility of the school. There have also been some situations where so much "stuff" is going on in the home that reading with the children is not even on the radar. It is also a challenge to encourage reading at home when the parent has a reading problem as well. Understanding of the beginning reading model is so important to help in building each child's skills from where they start with us.
