I want to do this!!!
Mon Sep 21, 2015 20:37

After reading your post I love what you are doing with your EC group. I would love to do this with a group of my EC students but I am cautious due to the amount of time I work with them. The virtual literature group sounds great and I want you let me know how this works because I have a period of time that students work independently and I think this would be a great time for them to work on something like this. Avery Schools also has Thinking Maps but I am not sure if everyone uses them today. I was not a teacher when they started using Thinking Maps but I think that someone can teach or train me in using them.
While reading the articles I found myself shaking my head in agreeing with the authors and how using GOs with LD students can be beneficial. Last year I worked with a group of students that were reading a novel that they highly enjoyed yet when it came to comprehension they lacked good conversation about the book. I think that if I incorporated GOs with my EC students, their comprehension would be stronger and we would be able to have more in depth conversations that include higher level thinking.

In my professional opinion, the best way to teach students to use TMs is to totally immerse them in to using them for everything. For instance, I used them for an attendance system in the morning.... more

Great ideas Shannon! Thanks! I haven't ever thought of having their morning or afternoon routines shown in a graphic organizer! Many times I also give them steps on the board to finish work but... more

What was the book? You have to teach them how to talk about the book. Discussion Director helps move the discussion along asking higher level questions that the students have to answer.

I think that would be great for the group of 5th graders you have this year. I have book sets if you are interested.

Hi, Haley: I agree. I feel that GOs help all students organize their thoughts. Especially for you EC students, organizing information visually will help them make connections and give a 'pattern' to... more
