When I did my student teaching, we used to do the DOL and I felt it was very beneficial for such a short quick lesson. With first grade I used to use the Letterland sentences that are on the spelling test and have students make corrections to them. I would purposefully make mistakes that they had to point out and help me to correct. My students LOVED doing this activity and would ask if we could do it again. Most mistakes that I made were capitals, punctuation, spelling and leaving words out or putting them in the incorrect order.
