Sending the bear with the journal is a great idea. This offers so many opportunities for the students to be creative and really brings in the motivation piece. Another possibility is to get grandparents involved if possible. Having the students write a letter to grandparents and mail it and then ask the grandparents to respond by mail. They can choose a friend or neighbor if grandparents are not possible. This is another way for students to really see the communication and motivation for writing. Usually children love to get something in the mail and can learn about the address and why they need a stamp on a letter.

      I wonder what Beth or Lara could do to help with this because I think it would be a great chance to share their culture with their classmates even if it was in a different language.
