Martha,

I agree with you that teachers need to find teachable moments for grammar instruction. I feel that teachers need to thread it into their daily teaching so that students will naturally correct themselves. Patricia Dunn writes, "These are teachable moments, opportunities to provide just in-time grammar lessons that match what students need it, when they want it." I feel that you can incorporate daily grammar without explicit instruction. This can be done through model writing with the students by continually editing and revising a writing piece. This will help show the students our investment in our own writing. Teachers can also think out loud while modeling to show the students their thought process. I think this in turn can help students learn how to continually make their work better.

          I have always known that modeling was a "best practice" and of course, in elementary grades it is done constantly. However, I didn't always model my writing to students until having Dr. Frye's class.

          That's so true...there is so much to grammar, that it's easy to get so wrapped up in the actual correctness of it all, that you lose the real point of writing...which is to express yourself.... more
