Forget grammar; love writing

Hi, Amanda:

I have always felt as if I "was doing wrong" by not explicitly teaching the weekly grammar skill to my students. However, especially since I have moved to a primary-grade classroom and learning from our writing instruction last year, I feel that students must believe whole-heartedly that their 'voice' counts in the grand scheme of life. Therefore, it makes sense that teaching isolated skills is a waste of time and that we must promote the love of writing to our students. I agree with you about the spelling skill of writing. However, I have not been dwelling on it while my students write. I model stretching the sounds of unknown words, using our word walls as spelling tools, and emphasizing spelling the words correctly that they have learned during phonics class thus far. I grew up disliking to write because we had to diagram sentences during middle school (which I found difficult to accomplish at first), and I also saw the 'red pen' written over several of my pieces of text throughout my student career. Currently, my goal is to promote the love of communication via listening, speaking, and writing.

Hey Shannon: If I do not have time within my school day to use DOL activities, I am not going to do so. However, if I need a 'time filler' within the school day, I believe it would not hurt the... more
