Re: Grammar Instruction vs. Conferencing with Writers

Shannon, you made me almost laugh out loud, and want to "amen!" reading your post! I never, ever, connected grammar with my own writing as a student either. Did anyone? Please speak up if you did....

I agree 100% with you about conferencing. We never conferenced with our teacher either, and you make a great point when you said you were never actually taught how to peer edit. We cannot expect students to successfully benefit from something that we have never taught them to do.

I have a student who may never be able to write a grammatically correct story this year on his own, but he is actually one of the best story-tellers in my class. I have to be so careful when I conference with him that I don't miss the forest from the trees. I know I have to guide him in seeing his errors and help him edit, but the last thing I want to do it discourage his "writer's spirit".

I was taught grammar in school and never connected it's content to my writing. I never said to myself..."I need an adverb in this sentence or this predicate doesn't sound right." I didn't really... more
