In my opinion being read to is one of the greatest ways for any child to become a reader and a writer as well as, when the time comes, a better reader and writer. The use of Mentor Texts and modeling is a proven strategy that works. Read alouds engage our students and offer different styles of the art of reading. Children can hear the stories and listen to how language is used, how it flows, how a writer grabs their attention. Children can then take what they have listened to and apply that to their own writing. This is one of the best ways for a child to improve their writing skills, by simply listening and writing themselves.
