Digital Literature Group

I am in the process of doing this now with a group of 4 struggling readers. The article talked about how these college students read a book and completed a literature group role based on the book. My students are reading a chapter night and they are choosing a literature group job and asking or answering a higher level discussion director question(s) on a discussion board in Haiku. They a posted their completed job on the discussion board for others to see and comment on. The roles that they can choose from are Artful Artist, Word Wizard, Mapper, Summarizer, and Connector. I may decide to add more but I would have to explicitly teach the new role for a few weeks until they could handle doing it digitally. That was an important point from the Calvert article that said you must explicitly teach the content and the technology before assuming the students can do it. I learned my lesson early on with that. Just recently I started recording me reading part of the chapter to expose them to fluent and accurate reading of the same text and posting it on the assignments for the group. This was it helps take the burden of so much text to read and serves as a model to learn by. Haiku has really impressed me in this venture. This also allows for differentiation within the small group. Student has different expectations based on their ability level.
