Melanie, I also used the popsicle stick method with my first graders last year. This seemed to work well, and what I noticed was that students automatically quit using them when they knew they no longer needed them. I thought I would need to "wean" them off of the sticks, but they gradually quit using on their own. I think that through good teacher-modleing and providing lots of opportunities for them to write and receive teacher feed back, they will eventually begin to space include "white space" in their writing. Just my opinion though! :)
