Thanks Melanie...that's a great strategy as the word KNOW is not flexible...adding the word THINK allows more freedom of thought. I am glad to hear that eventually you see the silent read process take place in first grade. I have only really seen that happen with a of couple students each year at the Kinder level. I am always thrilled to hear them all reading, so I try not to harp too much to read silently...but some do anyway, and they are usually those who are the exceptional readers by years end.
